About me

I have been working with children since I was 13 years old when I went to my local Red Cross in White Plains New York where I grew up, to take their babysitting course! Throughout high school and college, I was always around children. Either babysitting, lifeguarding for busy summer camps or teaching swimming lessons. I didn't realize I wanted to be a teacher when I graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a degree in Spanish Literature and French. However when I was offered a job teaching Spanish in a D.C charter school the summer after graduation, I decided to give it a try. My very first teaching job was challenging and rewarding. I taught Spanish as a specialty teacher to every grade from pre-k to 8th grade. I soon realized that I had a passion for early childhood! After this time I wanted to do some more traveling before I committed to going to graduate school, so I moved to Costa Rica to teach English as a second language while I waited for my Peace Corps placement. I soon went to Guyana in South America with the Peace Corps to teach as well. After the Peace Corps, I moved back to New York and started my Master's program at Bank Street College. In 2014, I graduated with a dual Master's in General and Special Education for Early Childhood. Since then I have been teaching in various school settings, private, public and charter schools. I taught at a private international preschool in the upper west side for 2's and 3's, kindergarten and 2nd grade. I have made a ton of really great relationships with the families of my students, who often call me for occasional babysitting. Over the years, I have learned to appreciate the earliest stages of life and how they impact development and learning. I was inspired after watching a movie called the Business of Being Born, to become a doula! For three years now, I have been teaching full time and doula-ing on the side. Now I have decided to become a full time doula and lactation consultant.

I have always enjoyed working with children 1 to 1 or in small groups where each child can get a lot of attention. I also enjoy working with children with special needs and find the work to be very rewarding. I occasionally volunteer for a center that offers free Mommy and Me classes for toddlers with Down Syndrome. My close friends would describe me as a committed, reliable person who loves to enjoy life. I am open to trying new things and I am always looking for ways to grow and improve my practice.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

A mother and a successful entrepreneur, owning my own prenatal and postpartum care business. My center would have doulas and other holistic health care practitioners (acupuncturists, massage therapists, counselors, nutritionists, child birth educators, lactation consultants etc) that women and families need to be healthy and successful. I would also like to have mommy and me classes and other parent education workshops. I have also thought about going back to school for midwifery... :)
