About me

Throughout my academic career and volunteer experiences, I have always had a special interest in working with children. As a recent graduate of Columbia’s Post Bac Premedical program, I have volunteered primarily with opportunities in pediatric medicine. I have spent time around ill and healthy children, and have developed a special interest in the health and well-being of children and young adults. In college I majored in psychology and was able to take insightful courses in developmental psychology, and I feel that this background has provided me with a crucial understanding of how to interact with young children. While pursuing my passion for children in academia, I was able to participate in volunteer opportunities where I honed the skills learned through my psychology classwork. I was an active member of DC READS, an after-school tutoring program that helps reinforce critical reading skills for children in kindergarten through high school. Being able to witness and experience a child’s success was empowering and inspiring and has eventually led me to pursuing a path in medicine, specifically pediatric medicine.

In terms of my experience, I have worked as a babysitter for a family on the UES with a 3-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy. My duties included pick up at school, drop off and pick up from after school activities, organizing play groups, cooking dinner, and getting them ready for bed. Through this work I have discovered nuanced challenges that come with this age group. I have found that my patience and calm demeanor have helped me in overcoming the typical dilemmas that arise in childcare. I am also extremely fun loving, and am never one to turn down the opportunity to participate in the whimsies of childhood.

I also currently work as a part-time tutor for school-aged children from first to tenth grade. For my younger students, I primarily help with teaching and strengthening phonics, reading, and elementary arithmetic skills. For my middle school students, I primarily help them prepare for SHSAT standardized tests. With these student, we work on more complex content in mathematics, critical reading, and science. Lastly, I tutor high school students in high school level sciences and math and the ACT/SAT. My work as a tutor has afforded my the opportunity to interact with children and young adults at all ages. I have also been able to hone my ability to explain complex ideas in simple, easy to understand terms, a crucial skill needed as a babysitter.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love being very active with the children I care for. In warm weather, I love to play outside and take the children to a local, safe park. I also enjoy arts and craft projects, playing board games and puzzles, as well as reading with them. Depending on the age group, I like to involve the children with what I am cooking for dinner (ie: spreading the sauce while making homemade pizza) or baking with them depending on food allergies.
