About me
One of the very original SmartSitters NYC, I have over 15 years of creative arts teaching and childcare experience. I am passionate about honoring and respecting the whole child; I am devoted to cultivating presence and kindness both in myself as caregiver and in the psyche of the children with whom I spend time. I love to connect with children where they are, offer deep listening and share with them the wonders of the natural world. I am inquisitive and enlivened by the honesty and remarkable intelligence inherent in children.
Born in Long Beach, CA and raised in Seattle, my early life was bathed in the creativity of artist culture. My mother is a Jazz singer and my father a West African drum teacher and painter. My older sister is an Opera singer, my younger brother a poet and rapper and my youngest sister a filmmaker and visual artist. I began teaching creative drama to young ones as work study to support my own acting training when I was 15.
I studied Performing Arts + Activism (using art for community healing) at Scripps College in Claremont, CA. In partial completion of my undergrad thesis, I developed and taught an improvisation curriculum to cultivate empathy and anti-bullying skills in children who had been previously expelled. I have since built a business teaching mindfulness and dramatic play.
I have professional child care experience with...
- Infants
- Toddlers
- Preschoolers
- School-aged (K-5)
- Preteen
- Teenagers
- Twins
- Multiples
- Special Needs
In 5 years, I hope to be...
Doing everything I am doing now with deepened insight, ease and grace. I hope to have directed my first (and second!?) feature film. Perhaps started a family of my own and continue to live, work, teach, dream and play in the field of wonderous imagination and presence.
Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...
Imagination, visual arts, movement, mindfulness, cooking, baking, dreaming, singing, playing and sharing in genuine kindness and confident vulnerability. I love teaching children about their emotions, the consequences of their choices/actions and how to speak up for themselves and ask for what they need with kindness, confidence and deep recognition of their worth! <3
