About me

Since starting with Smart Sitting in 2014, I have had the joy of working with families on full time and long-term basis. In 2018, I decided to return to graduate school to receive a Master in Fine Arts. While my main focus has been on my studies these past three years, I have continued to stay active in my care-giver field as well as broaden my knowledge in other creative employment. Now having finished my Master's degree this past spring, I am excited to be back in New York and continuing my childcare profession.

My most recent and long-term placement was a full time position working with a family of two girls. They were 2 and 4 when I started, then 5 and 7 when I left (to attend graduate school). In this position I would pick up the girls at their two different schools. I coordinated play dates and oversaw logistics of after school activities such as swimming, tennis, gymnastics, ballet, and soccer. I prepped and made their dinners and often took care of their bedtime routines. I enjoy every aspect of childcare. It gives me the opportunity to utilize my artist capabilities and be imaginative and creative with children. It also allows me to engage with my logistical and problem solving self. I enjoy the challenge of each day being something different, while also meeting the demands of daily tasks and routines that must be upheld.

I originally pursued childcare work because of my mother, who was an elementary school teacher. I learned from her the importance of creating a space where both imagination and structure can exist. How moments can be fun while also educational, and how children are truly inspirational in their capacity to share, listen, and learn. I feel very fortunate to be in this profession. Like my mother, I also love childcare in that I get to see the growth in a child's sense of self, creativity, intelligence, and empathy.

In five years from now I hope to still be living on City Island, maybe in a bit bigger home with more space to garden/farm.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I attribute most of my child care philosophies to my mother. Her and her father, my grandpa, encouraged an environment where "boredom was a choose". If we were bored it was because we were choosing to be, not because there was nothing to do. She encouraged us to always being doing something active; whether that was to be outside, work on a puzzle, draw a picture, or play a game. Needless to say these are now activities I am very fond of teaching and sharing with children. From magnet tiles to painting, drawing to baking, these tactile activities teach children to problem solve, build 3-dimensional understanding, encourage creativity, and are key stepping stones to reading and writing.
