About me

My name is Mariama. I am originally from Senegal, a country in West Africa known for its vibrant culture, rich traditions, and warm, welcoming people. I have had the privilege of growing up in this beautiful country, surrounded by the sounds of lively music, the rhythm of daily life, and the essence of community. As a mother, I am deeply proud of my children, who are both now young adults. My son is 20 years old, and my daughter is 18. Watching them grow has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. They have both taught me as much as I have taught them, and together, we’ve shared moments of joy, challenges, and growth.

I am fluent in French, which is the official language of Senegal, and I also speak a little Spanish. Over the years, my language skills have allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. I believe that language is an essential bridge that connects us to others. This is one of the reasons I decided to pursue further education in the field of bilingual education, to better understand how language shapes learning and to use that knowledge to make a difference in the lives of children.

For over 15 years, I have worked in the childcare field, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with children of all ages. Whether I was caring for infants, toddlers, or school-aged children, I found that every stage of a child's development presented a new opportunity to teach and learn. There is something incredibly special about witnessing a child’s first steps, their first words, or their excitement when they master a new skill.

My experience has given me a deep understanding of the importance of creating a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children. Every child is unique, and I have always tailored my approach to meet the specific needs of each child in my care. I love making music with children, and taking them on adventure out in the world: whether that's to music lessons, the zoo, or the playground.

In 2017 I went back to college to pursue a degree in education. In January 2022, I graduated from Borough of Manhattan Community College with a degree in Bilingual Education.

In addition to my work as a nanny, I worked as a part-time clinical research coordinator at Mount Sinai, a prestigious medical institution in New York City. This role was part of a research project focused on breast cancer within the Senegalese community. It was a deeply fulfilling experience, as it allowed me to give back to my community in a meaningful way.

Looking back on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I’ve had and the lessons I’ve learned. My work in childcare has been incredibly rewarding, and I feel lucky to have played a part in the lives of so many children. I am also excited for the future—both in terms of my career and the impact I can continue to make. My passion for childcare, education, and community service is unwavering, and I am eager to see where my journey will take me next. I believe that every child has the potential to grow, learn, and thrive, and I am committed to supporting them every step of the way.
