About me

My name is Maria Herrera. I lived in Ridgewood, Queens most of my life. I moved to Teaneck, NJ in 2016 I really like living here. It’s much quieter than NY. I have three younger siblings. I am 10 years older than my first sibling and I helped to take care of them from an early age. I enjoyed helping with feedings, changing diapers, playing and reading to them, and taking them out for walks. When they started school my responsibility was to pick them up from school and take them home.

I graduated High School in 1996 and started working right away at a retail store. I got married soon after and started a family. I have two daughters they are now 25 and 16 years old. I was a stay-at-home mom for 12 years and truly enjoyed taking care of my children and having the tasks and responsibilities of a household.

I became a nanny by accident. My daughter was 5 years old and just started school but I was unemployed. My sister who was a nanny at the time got into a motorcycle accident and could no longer work due to her injuries. My sister asked me to take her place as a nanny and take care of the child that was under her care. I agreed and started taking care of the child by the name of Sofia who was 9 months old. My work as a nanny came easy to me. I enjoyed everything about the job. My proudest moment with Sofia had to be when I potty trained her. We worked really hard at it and she eventually got it! I was proud of her. I liked the long walks, taking her to activities, feeding her, and Sofia falling asleep in my arms for her naps. I was hooked, this was my calling.

I really enjoyed everything about my job. When that job ended I started working with a beautiful family and worked with them for 9 years. They had a daughter and a son,
Madeline and Graham. I took care of Maddie at age 3 months old and Graham when he was 4 months old. I bottle-fed them, did sleep training with them, changed diapers, Fed them solid food when the time was right, did laundry, played with them, and made sure they were clean and protected while in my care. I picked them up from school and had lots of playdates too.

I am bilingual and speak Spanish. I did teach the kids a few words in Spanish when they were small. I worked full-time. I enjoy being a nanny. It is a rewarding job. It’s hard work and I learned to be patient with kids. I love seeing the kids so small in the beginning and later seeing how much they learn and how caring, giving, and loving they can be. The goal is to allow kids to be themselves and help them grow to their full potential, also to be understanding to their needs. It’s hard work for parents and caregivers, but I’m glad to be a part of it.
