About me
Hello! My name is Maleyne. I am originally from Chicago and recently moved to NYC for graduate school. I have 3 younger sisters and 12 younger cousins. My greatest memories are the ones I spent playing with my cousins and feeling free and full of happiness. I received my bachelor's in Sociology from Loyola University Chicago and am currently pursuing my master's in Sociology and education at Teachers College Columbia. During and after college, I worked as a nanny/babysitter for different families, most of which were infants/toddlers. After this, I began working as a tutor for an initiative program at Chicago Public Schools.
In college, I worked full-time at a daycare as a teacher in the infants and two classrooms. I worked full-time for 45 hours per week. When I first started, one child was 3 months and the other was 6 months. Every morning I would come in and help with breakfast. I would put one baby down for a nap and would then go play with the other child and put them down for a nap. Once both children woke up, I would give them a bottle, and we would head outside or do an activity. We would make our way back for lunch and then nap. After their midday nap, I would prepare a snack and then we would do tummy time and other developmental activities. The last family I worked with was part-time. One child was 2.5 years old, and the infant was about 9 months. The children used cloth diapers. It was important to change them consistently. We would then go to the park or gymnastics class, go back for lunch, and nap. Minimal to no screen time was required for all positions.
My favorite part about being a nanny is being able to work closely with the parents and providing a safe environment that encourages children to grow and navigate their personalities. I believe that education, mental health, and emotional awareness are all vital for a successful and happy life. I often find myself reading articles and books about social-emotional development and improvement skills. During my free time, I enjoy walking, going to museums, and trying new things/places. I see myself becoming a researcher and working for a not-for-profit that targets equitable education for all.
