About me
My name is Karen Thompson. I was born and raised in Kingston Jamaica. I had 3 siblings, 2 sisters, and a brother, my brother is now deceased due to drowning. As a child, I used to enjoy swimming a lot and hanging out with my friends. Ever since the passing of my brother I've had a phobia of large bodies of water. I have done all of my schooling in Jamaica. Community college is my highest level of education where I did a two-year clerical course. After finishing community college I have worked a variety of jobs. I did product promotions, and a little accounting, and I was also an optical dispenser. I got interested in child care because I would come to the US and sometimes take care of my cousin's children so that has sparked my interest in the field. Since then I have continued with making child/elderly care my profession.
I have been in child care for 15+ years taking care of newborns to 10 years old. I started off working with newborns as a baby nurse. My longest stay with a family would be 3 months. My duties consisted of overall care for the baby and assisting the mother. This included feeding, burping, diaper changes, laundry, and sanitizing bottles. For babies aged from 4 months to a year, i would introduce sleep training, tummy time, and solid foods. I also played with their stuffed animals with them and took them to the park in their stroller. As a nanny, in most of the jobs that I have done, the children were 4 months of age to 10 years old. My job would include taking the children to class, school drop off/pickup, the park, sometimes doctors' visits, laundry, meal prep, feeding, cleaning the common area where they play, and keeping a good schedule I also have very good communication with the parents.
I am a caring, loving, patient, kind, honest, trustworthy, hardworking and professional nanny. I love learning new things about children which is why I do short courses Emergent Literacy and Baby Led Weaning. My love of children motivates me to pursue child-related work in hopes of not just being a nanny but to potentially opening up my agency. My philosophy is to just help to further nurture children in the stages as they grow.
