About me

Hello! My name is Agnes Asamoah and I am 23 years old. I am Ghanaian American but was born and raised here in New York. I am a middle child with two sisters who I love dearly and also live around many family members. I went to the University of Michigan which I loved but sadly could not finish due to finances so I am hoping to finish my bachelor's degree here in the city. During my time in Ann Arbor, I majored in Gender and health studies with a minor in music, before I discovered my love for child care. I also dream of becoming a birth doula one day after finishing my bachelor's degree.
I started as a floater, so I would be assigned a different classroom with classes ranging from 6-month-olds to 4-year-olds and I would help the lead teachers with any task they needed. After being a floater, I moved into becoming an assistant pre-k teacher for a summer. This was such an eye-opening experience for me and really made me want to focus on early child care. I had 12 kids in my class and I had to aid my lead teacher in getting them ready for kindergarten. I then moved back to New York where I became a nanny for two girls ages 3 & 4 years old. We would go on after-school adventures as we would call it to the library and playgrounds and I would sometimes watch them through the night. I appreciate the position so much but I wanted to work more full time so I became an infant teacher. I had worked with infants previously but never solely infants so at first it was daunting. I learned so much about infant development and what was expected of each infant at certain stages. I got to help babies learn to walk, eat, crawl, and come into their own. I was then promoted to lead teacher after three months of working there. As a lead, I had to make sure that all 8 babies in my class were doing well day to day but also plan lessons that would help aid in their development. I grew such a close relationship with the parents and the babies and got to help 4 babies transition into the next class! It was so eye-opening to be able to be a part of each baby's start in life and also help their parents feel comfortable and confident in the care I was providing.
My childhood is a big part of why I want to be a nanny actually. Due to how expensive good child care can be, my mother found it difficult to find someone to take care of me and my siblings. A lot of the people who watched my sisters and I were not kind and could be neglectful at times. I remember constantly wanting my mom to come home because I wasn’t enjoying the experience. As an adult, I now have the chance to be the person that my younger self needed. I take what I do very seriously but I also strive to make any children I watch feel safe and comfortable with me whilst their parents are away. I try to care for each child as if they were my own. If I do have kids someday, I would want anyone taking care of them to do the same!
