About me

I am an English major student that has worked extensively with children from as young as 3 years of age. I have worked with children academically and physically— academically as a kindergarten head teacher, as a teacher's assistant, and as a tutor (special needs and otherwise); and physically, as a body-conditioning trainer, flexibility trainer, and basic figure skating coach. I have traveled about quite a bit and have lived in a number of different countries, which in itself, is an experience that has allowed me to meet a number of very different children, from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds. My work in the midst of so much diversity largely involved promoting tolerance and empathy, along with inspiring, motivating, and rousing interests and spirits.

It is my belief that mothers, teachers, coaches, and people in positions that involve shaping the lives of children, have an ultimate duty to fulfill toward their charges. I take my duties in one such position very seriously. Solemnity aside, when I interact with children, my top priority is making sure that they feel at ease and are comfortable before anything else. When working with children, facilitating dialogue and allowing them to be truly heard while expressing themselves, has always garnered positive returns; cultivating grounds of confidence and self-esteem within the young and not-so-young learners. I have learned that listening— truly listening— and speaking to children as I might have liked to be spoken to as a child (with interest, respect, encouragement, and patience), promotes genuine learning and a greater joy in their day to day undertakings. My approach to teaching and babysitting is one that incorporates balance in all things, structure, high-energy, and laughter... bouts of laughter!

Aside from teaching and coaching children, I have also worked as a babysitter for families of various backgrounds and circumstances. I have babysat for the infant age and upwards, often acting as a sleepover-sitter as well. In addition to babysitting, I am also competent in personal training, editing, teaching college level writing, ESL (English as a Second Language), and start-up business procedures. While in Dubai from 2010-2012, I was involved in the early stages of my younger brother’s start-up company, filling in as a sort of jack-of-all-trades. Since spending a good deal of time in the Gulf (Dubai UAE, Doha Qatar), I am also able to speak and read Arabic on a moderate level. As an ex-show figure skater, athletics has been (and still is) an integral aspect of my life. Nowadays, I am an avid taekwondo competitor, with a side interest in contortion and ballet.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

In all honesty, my favorite activity to do with children is reading, though I am also a strong believer in physical activity and free-play. Reading is where a lot of the magic occurs—and there is nothing quite like it when it comes to molding the imagination and teaching children to dream vast and colorful dreams. I enjoy teaching children how to read for themselves as well. In my mind, there are few gifts finer than the gift of literacy.
