About me
Hi families! My name is Deborah. I grew up in Westchester, New York with 3 of my oldest siblings and, as a child, I loved playing teacher. I loved it so much that, when I grew up, I decided to make it a reality by attending community college for my associate's in Early Childhood Education, and Lehman College for my Bachelor's in Speech Pathology.
While in school, I worked as a nanny with many families. I first nannied for 4 years, then became a teacher's assistant for 5 years in 3K, 4K, and Kindergarten while babysitting on the weekends. Nanning and babysitting helped me develop excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with children on their own level. Though I took a break from Nanning to be a full-time teacher, it became clear that what I loved most was the ability to spend time with children one-on-one and help facilitate their personal growth in a way that’s impossible in a classroom setting.
For instance, a family I worked with had a 2-year-old who loved to draw, so every Wednesday and Friday became Paint Day! We would grab some construction paper, head outdoors, and paint what we saw. Often, I would bring an arrangement of other crafts to introduce our little artists to other mediums, as well. This kind of personal exploration wouldn’t be possible in a group setting, and things like this have reaffirmed my decision to choose nannying as my career path. I’ve cared for children as young as newborns, and as old as 5 years old. In my most recent position, I changed diapers, prepared milk bottles, took strolls to the park, and went to the neighborhood playground. I also did extensive meal prep for the child, played indoors, read stories, and arranged play dates with other nannies in the neighborhood. Keeping a child in my care safe is extremely important to me, which is why I always make sure I have an updated CPR and First Aid certification. When I’m not taking care of children, I enjoy building relationships and spending quality time with my family and friends. I like to be fully present wherever I am, engage in meaningful conversations, and share in activities that bring joy to everyone involved. Whether it’s baking, cooking, or picnicking in a park, I aim for the opportunity to share in a meaningful experience. Similarly, I find that children are always learning and looking for ways to be stimulated, so I do my best to create those meaningful experiences for them as well. I enjoy baking cookies on rainy days with the child I care for or making up stories while on a walk in the neighborhood; stimulating their minds and making them feel safe while on their journey to self-discovery. There’s nothing better than being the one who helps a child learn more about themselves and guides them in their personal growth.
