About me

I was born and raised on the coast of Virginia, right on the Chesapeake Bay. My family has a small farm that grows wheat, corn, and other grains, and we keep a tight-knit group of chickens, ducks, and geese as a company. I went to school at the University of Virginia, where I majored in politics and also Italian studies. Since graduating, I have taught in elementary schools in Charlotte, NC, and Philadelphia, PA.

I have taught full-time for five years, and currently teach 1st grade at a public school in Philadelphia. These roles have included planning events for students, collaborating with families to support student's needs, and providing rigorous, enjoyable instruction to them as they learn the foundations of reading, math, and the sciences. In my class of 25-30 children, I work closely with children who are learning English, who have special needs, and who have experienced challenging situations. I enjoy supporting these groups and all students as they experience these primary years in school. Before teaching professionally, I volunteered as a tutor/director of a program in Charlottesville orchestrated through Latinx and Migrant Aid for three years. While in college, I nannied for a family with a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old during summer vacation, spending every weekday with the family from 7:30 am until 4 pm. I would read, play, make meals, and complete chores with this family, as well as take the children to social events and to the library, pool, or park.

I believe that all children deserve attentive care, boundless encouragement, and many opportunities to explore their interests and goals! I love learning about their favorite things and sharing my love of reading, writing, and attempting art projects with them. Whether stuck inside on a rainy afternoon or given a sunny day, I approach every minute I spend with children as a chance to support them emotionally, intellectually, and creatively!

In 5 years, I hope to be...

teaching, nannying, and perhaps fluent in a new language! Philadelphia has been a wonderful home the last two years, and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love sharing art projects and math projects with children! Art is accessible for all children, as long as it is flexible and able to incorporate their strengths and interests. Anything can be art, or help us in our pursuit of artmaking. Similarly, math can also be tailored to children's individual proficiencies and provides limitless opportunities for games and deep thinking. Whether it's a counting game or a series of riddles and problems, I love making it fun and competitive for all ages and levels.
