About me

Hi, I’m Shandra. I was born and raised in Connecticut and find myself always returning. As a middle child of 8, I enjoyed filling in my younger siblings’ shoes while my older siblings filled my shoes as they say. Growing up I had a passion for doing hair and makeup and enjoyed making others look and feel confident. I moved to NYC to pursue my dreams as a hairstylist and received my cosmetology license as I help service families part-time as a babysitter. After trade school, I began to further my studies in the Medical Field at Monroe College for Health Management. And shortly started working as DSP to help children with disabilities and have been assisting families since.

I began working with children when I was in high school, I volunteered in an afterschool childcare program for the YMCA where we worked with kids ages 5 and up. Also, when neighbors would need extra help on the weekends, I would be a helping hand, and that led me to become a private caretaker for some wonderful families. I have up to 15 years of childcare experience, with infants, toddlers, teens, kids with disabilities, and Adults too. In Junior High, I started working with a family of 2 twins ages 5. Duties included dropping them off and picking them up from daycare when needed, homework help, providing entertainment, cooking dinner, outside activities, traveling, and emotional support. While in New York I had the pleasure of working with a family of 4 years a family of 2. 1 boy and 1 girl, my duties included, homework help, meal prepping, providing dinner and putting them to bed, and occasional overnights and weekends when needed. I also assisted a family with 1 boy 6 years of age. This job included helping with homework, arts and crafts, practicing coloring reading books, and preparing meals and snacks. When I worked as a Direct Support Professional, I provides one-on-one care for a person who has become injured or ill, or mentally or physically challenged at birth. I worked with many different families supporting clients by teaching them to be the most independent in their self-help skills, including assisting with bathing, dressing, cooking, eating, housekeeping, laundry, and toileting.

The word “Humanitarian” resonates with me because I am naturally empathetic, supportive, and concerned about the well beings of others. I enjoy helping ALL children and (their families) it’s the most rewarding thing I can think of. Working with children reminds you of how amazing and exciting the world can be. I want our future generation to have the ability to flourish and reach their full potential. To understand the true meaning of having empathy and compassion for others. My goal is to encourage children to look toward a brighter future and extend social and cultural reinforcements. In order for our children to achieve their goals we must encourage them with statements that affirm effort and perseverance.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

Obtaining a degree in Social Work. As a babysitter I want to develop my skillset. I have always wanted to make a difference in peoples lives. I want to be able to help those of all life stages cope with and solve everyday problems. And advocate for and develop plans to improve our children's well beings. With social work I know I can do this in a caring and supportive way. My passion for social work stems from both personal experiences and a love for helping others who have had similar experiences as myself.
