About me

My name is Tommy Davis. I received my bachelor's in psychology from the University of Florida. I grew up in Gainesville, Florida where the University is located as well, and had a very enriching childhood with many artistic and educational events and opportunities in the local area. Both my parents worked in Education growing up as well so I was privileged in that regard as I was always encouraged to learn more about my interests. That is something from my own upbringing I always keep in mind when working with kids.

I am currently a special needs and behavioral nanny living in Brooklyn. I have two years of professional experience working with kids with varying diagnoses including but not limited to ASD, ADHD, and PTSD. I have been both a registered behavior technician in the past as well as a special needs nanny/caregiver. I have the most experience with kids between the ages of 7 and 13 but have also worked with kids younger than that. I have a deep passion for working with families to not only provide respite care but to also increase the well-being and quality of life for everyone in the household. I have experience dealing with difficult behaviors such as tantrums, aggression, and self-injurious behaviors. I also have experience with defiant behaviors and with teaching empathy and social skills. I have a passion for literacy and love both reading to kids and being read to. Cooking is another one of my strengths as I do use cooking as my way to decompress and I intend to pivot and become a private chef later on in life. I have experience as a nanny for neurotypical children as well and worked with a family for around three years serving as a driver and a long-term sitter. I also was a volunteer tutor while in college.

I use positive reinforcement continuously when working with children and am skilled at meeting kids where they are to help them learn. I am big on letting kids figure things out on their own while also providing the necessary structure and support to do so. Knowing how to find that balance between when to step in and when to give kids space is an intuition that I am glad that I have.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

Placed with a long-term family in New York working in a childcare role and performing family assistant duties such as cooking for the family and driving the kids to different destinations. I hope to have also taken some culinary courses in order to improve my technique in the kitchen.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love to read to kids and teach them different mindfulness skills. Emotional intelligence is not something taught to kids in schools but is very important for long-term wellbeing. I do love watching the kids I work with use the strategies I have taught them to self-regulate on their own in a healthy way. I do love teaching kids how to cook as well as teaching them different study strategies when studying or completing homework. Outdoor education is also important to me, especially in New York where many neighborhoods are surrounded by concrete, glass, and steel.
