About me

My name is Emmy McCafferty. I’m the youngest of 5 children. My father is a self-employed environmental lawyer and writer. My mother was an elementary school teacher. I have a large family. My mother is one of seven children. I have many cousins of different ages. My family is very close and spends a lot of time together. I have a cousin with special needs who I spend time with often. My mother has been handicapped since I was an early teenager. I’ve spent my adolescence and early adulthood taking care of her before moving to New York City to study drama. My brother has two little boys who are the stars of our family!

I’ve always loved children. I admire their curiosity, joy, and natural sense of humor. Children inspire me and bring out the best in me.

Growing up, we didn’t have cable television and my siblings and I shared a lot of things- clothes, toys, and books. Because this is how my parents ran our home, it was up to us to find ways to entertain ourselves. This was easy with many siblings and a big backyard. Each of my siblings and I took piano lessons starting at the age of five. Our parents instilled in us an appreciation for the arts. Our house was filled with music from sunrise to sunset. They emphasized the importance of helping others. My mom and dad took us to nursing homes during the holidays to sing to the elderly. We also volunteered in occasional city cleanups and community gardens.

I’ve worked as a babysitter and also a daycare worker at the local daycare in my hometown. I’ve worked with infants up to pre-teens. I gained a lot of experience in child-care working at a daycare. I changed diapers, prepared meals, etc. I am energetic, optimistic, and love a challenge!

In 5 years, I hope to be...

In 5 years, I hope to still be living in New York. I aspire to be a working actress in film, television, or Broadway. I hope to be happy & healthy. I would love to become successful enough one day to buy my parents their dream home. I would like to have saved and invested. In 5 years, I hope I am a well-trained actress who continues to achieve new heights. I cannot remember not having a burning desire to act.  I obsessively watched old movies like Meet Me in St. Louis with Judy Garland and Funny Girl with Barbara Streisand over and over imagining myself in their roles.  My sister Mattie and I performed for our patient family after mealtimes.  The Phantom of the Opera was a favorite part of our repertoire (Mattie never let me be Christine).  While in elementary school I competed for and won scholarships two years in a row for the summer workshop offered by New Stage, a small professional theater company.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I like singing songs with children. I like playing instruments and love to share and teach music to children. Art history is a subject I love that, I believe, children can really enjoy and benefit from if introduced to it in a fun way. Reading old children’s stories and children’s literature is a fun pastime as well- one my father used to do with me and my siblings. Nursery rhymes. Playing pretend and using the imagination!
