About me

My name is Nakayla Murray. I grew up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area in Brooklyn, New York. I come from a very close family including an older sister and a younger brother. I also have a 6 year old son. As a child I enjoyed spending time with family and friends. I liked to listen to music and dance. I participated in the Step Program and other group activities in school. I also liked to help out and give back to the community such as soup kitchens. One of my earliest jobs as a youth was babysitting for close friends of the family and children from my neighborhood. Babysitting sparked an interest in children’s learning for me. Many people that knew me well, told me I was very nurturing and good with children.

I have worked with children over 10 years, starting with a work program in high school called Read Alliance in which I taught Kindergarten students how to read. This was my very first paid teaching experience, and from there I have had many more including: Boys and Girls Club, Substitute Teaching in child-care centers, Public, client based centers, integrated head start programs, Charter school and Department of Education.

I was also a Nanny for a 5 year old boy and his baby sister, 3 months old. Some of the responsibilities in this position included taking care of basic needs such as: feeding, diapering, tummy time, developmental milestones, and naps for the infant. I would pick the 5 year old up from school and help him with homework, art activities, and bath time. I also prepped meals, read stories and got both children ready for bed. After the infant was 1 year old, her mom placed her in Day Care. I still care for these children from time to time when they are out of school and I am available.

I am now a Pre-School Teacher looking to return to a nanny position for the next year or two while focusing on completing my Masters degree in Special Education. I have a Bachelors degree in Behavioral Science from Mercy College, and am two courses away from completing a Master’s Degree in Special Education at Capella University. I feel like children bring out a creative part of me and that I can be myself and a bit animated with children. I love to do arts and crafts activities with children and teach them to be theirselves and apply what they learn to their own world. I believe every child can learn anything as long as we make it relatable to their interests. Children are the future and helping them learn and explore is very rewarding.
