About me

I, Aslan Rolston, am originally from Los Angeles, CA currently residing in Brooklyn, NYC. My childhood is forever the most cherished time of my life. My career as a caretaker technically began when my younger sister was born when I was three. However, I began earning income as a babysitter first throughout college, and then when I arrived in NY in 2013, was always the most consistent and reliable job. I first started working with a family who had two children, 9 and 6 respectively. I worked for them for three years and my duties included picking them up from school, completing their homework, snacks, bathing, dishes, emptying the dishwasher, starting the laundry, and playing with them until their parents came home. Throughout that time, I also did frequent evening sits as well as looking after their house, and two cats, and ran the Airbnb on the ground floor of their brownstone while they were away on vacation. During the summers of each of these years, I looked after them for full days (8/9 am-4/5 pm) multiple days in a row, which I’ve always called ‘Aslan Camp’. My dance training and BFA degree came from the UNCSA where I first met and later joined the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company. Fast forward to now, and I’ve begun incorporating my long-standing passion for bringing dance and yoga into the Juvenile detention centers by earning my certification with the Prison Yoga Project to teach a trauma-informed and focused practice. My best qualities are that I entertain kids’ endless questions with curiosity and genuine interest while maintaining a consistent, firm, and gentle relationship. I strive to meet children on their level of attention and interests by engaging in activities like painting, drawing, dance parties, board games, video games, kids' TV shows, kids’ books & outdoor activities to name a few. The safety of my children is of utmost importance as well as being a positive influence on their growth and development throughout their childhood. Thank you in advance for trusting me and giving me the gift of learning from our youth.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

In five years, I hope to first and foremost have a family of my own. Part of the reason why I take my caretaking jobs so seriously is that I’m subliminally taking notes on how I will raise my children. In five years, I want to have graduated from a master’s program that I plan to begin this fall in either Social Work or Child Physiology/Development, at Brooklyn College. I also hope that along with getting my certification from the Prison Yoga Project and my Master's degree I will be qualified to teach at a school that focuses on children affected by trauma. There is a school that I recently found called Andrus which is in Yonkers and is for grades K-9 that was specifically created as an orphanage for children affected by trauma! I feel like I’ve found gold and that now I really see the light at the end of the tunnel for my career and aspirations. Even if this school doesn’t work out, I know now what type of environment I would like to live out in the formative years of my career. I truly can’t wait to begin excavating these plans of mine and to start giving back to the children of the future.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

What I focus on most with children is finding a balance between play and responsibility. I strive to be an example of someone that can stay centered and strong amidst the constant chaos that we all endure. I encourage a lot of artistic expressions, freedom of thought, and speech without judgment of any kind. I very much enjoy offering children a safe space to be themselves so that they can learn and succeed in their lives along with their natural steps of progression and knowledge. I love to teach children manners and continually stress the importance of incorporating them into your everyday actions. I value respect more than anything else and will always hold the children accountable.
