About me
My name is Jahnice Nelson born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. As a child I grew up in the Canarsie area and as a teen until now I've lived in the crown heights area of Brooklyn. I'm the youngest of my siblings; I have a brother and sister. Growing up I've always excelled in school and always was the one to help out the teacher or stay after school to help grade papers or clean the classroom. I come from a long line of childcare providers and teachers, rooting back from my great grandma. My mom was a daycare teacher, My aunt was an elementary school teacher, My grandmother and great grandmother were both nannies as well. So being a helpful individual has always been nurtured into me from young. my first job was working as a summer camp counselor at the age of 14 for 4/5 years old at the local community center. I attended Acorn Community High School and graduated with my diploma and went on to Queensborough Community College where i earned my associates in liberal arts. Working with children has always been my passion from young and working at the local community center and also my elementary school where i grew up it made me want to pursue a further career in childcare and education.
Working with children has always been a great passion of mine. It was my first youth summer job. I worked as a summer camp counselor for about 2 summers with kids age ranging from 5 to 12. I would take attendance upon arrival and supervising dismissal. I would write lesson plans each week to implement sticking to a stem based curriculum. Also supervising outdoor play and activities. We would take weekly trips to museum , aquariums, and nature walks throughout the summer, while sticking to an educational plan. While learning through the summer it molded me into becoming an activity specialist/group worker for my own elementary school that I attended. It gave me the ability to teach and gravitate my own classroom and children. We had to be multipurpose in this role. I would teach different subjects like art, and also a stem based activities, making all fun while doing so. My purpose for afterschool was to teach and have kids understand the work in front of them without having to feel like they're sitting back in the classroom after a long day. After leaving this role I started working as a co-teacher with infant/toddlers. In this position we worked on the different milestones for younger children to make sure they are on track and growing in the right way. We communicated with parents about little achievements and things that they can help us to work on with their child/ren. Also we would teach about the different things going all around them in the world and having them explore using different sensory. At this job I was called a great comfort and nurturer because I would usually be the one to help transition the young ones being away from their parents for the day. It was a great title because I took heed that the children would warm up to me and see the joy they would get when they realized how big the world is around them. Learning in all these positions and titles I took many strengths and weaknesses to prevail and become a better caretaker. My next job was a teacher's aide/ afterschool teacher at a charter school. Being a teacher's aide required of me supervising lunchtime/recess with different grades. Also running errands for the teachers throughout the school day and some reception work. I also acted as a para at times so certain classrooms can run as smoothly as possible and making sure to handle any interruptions. In the Afternoon I would start as an afterschool teacher teaching a variety of classes. I've taught cooking classes, art classes, girl's empowerment classes. Being able to communicate and transition with each child's interest and needs it has help me become a better nanny/caretaker as well.
Spending time with my family is essential for me. Especially my nieces, nephews and little cousins and what their interest are and how we can spend time doing them. I love a child"s creativity and imagination and being around my younger ones I feel like a big kid myself. Children are positive beings and all they need is a little excitement. A philosophy I live by with children is that they are like flowers that soak up the sun every chance they get so for children you are that ray of sunshine and they soak up what you do around who you are as a person and the warmth they feel when they are with you.
