About me
Hi there! My name is Sakeenah. I grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana as a second child. I fell in love with designing and went to study Textile Design at Louisiana State University and received my Bachelor’s of Science. After college, I moved to NYC to work with a Textile Lab. When I first moved to New York, I began to nanny in addition to my corporate job. While some might say you should choose one or the other, it occurred to me that I didn’t have to choose, so, for a long time, I did both!
As a second child of four children, I am an expert on how to navigate the sibling dynamic – I helped raise my younger siblings and was very involved in taking care of their after-school activities. When I first moved to New York, I had a consistent nanny job with two different families: one with three boys ages 5, 10, and 13, and another with two girls, 14 and 15 years old. My responsibilities included tutoring, helping out with homework, and handling all transportation, including pick up and drop off.
Using the organizational skills I learned from my corporate job, I also took on additional responsibilities, acting in a family assistant role. I managed an active calendar that included school and dentist appointments, art classes, sports clubs, after-school playtime, and after-school tutoring. I met with the parents on a weekly basis to discuss plans for the following week. I kept the house clean, did family dinner prep, and took care of the bath and bedtime routine. It is the most rewarding opportunity to be a part of raising kids! Helping them grow and thrive as human beings is the reason I do what I do.
My goal is to stimulate and encourage the children’s emotional, intellectual, physical, and social development by creating and implementing daily educational and physical activities. My approach to childcare is low key and relaxed, while still maintaining firm boundaries. I believe children do best when there are clear expectations, and when those expectations are enforced calmly and consistently.
