About me
My perspective of life is a mix of memories in the countryside of Colombia where I grow up as a kid and the urban city of New York City where I became an adult. One day enjoying green mountains and the smell of orange trees while the next time exploring the high-rise concrete buildings, and the smell of hot dogs. These two different approaches in life has made me conscious of the immense value of adapting my whole caregiver experience to each different child environment by providing patience, acceptance, and constant support through their learning process. This too can be reflected in my career choice. Even though I went to study Graphic Design at The School of Visual Arts and got my Bachelors of Fine Arts, I always knew that teaching was my way to help others to enjoy the wonderful and diverse world where we live. And what better than becoming child care, children have the ability to see the world in its genuine form and I believe that this quality is especially important and should be fostered throughout their development. So by pursuing both professions I have learned to incorporate art as a powerful communication skill while I help kids to feel connected to their parents and their surroundings. I believe that my ten years of nanny caregiver experience—involving infant, toddler, and child development, in areas related to social development, fine and gross motor development, as well as intellectual development—will be a great asset to any family.
Since 2012 I have been working with the Mayer family as their child caregiver since, raising and educating their now nine-year-old son. I facilitate and supervise activities that encourage fun and healthy habits and early literacy skills. In addition to my current work, my experience as a caregiver has involved children of young ages (Newborns through nine years old) across the spectrum. This has inspired me to educate myself in areas of child psychology, philosophy, and development through my own research and experience, as well as interactions with professionals who work with children. Through my self-education, I have implemented strategies that allow me to remain creative in presenting my knowledge to children in ways that stimulate their growing minds to fulfill learning milestones and social development. In addition to my creativity, I adapt to each child’s unique world, because I am dedicated to their learning processes and the many things they have to offer me through their perspective. I believe that my passion for early childhood education can be reflected as I am transforming my life to become a teacher. For now, I have been approved by the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality to work as a Teacher’s Aide and I am waiting to be approved to become a Teacher’s Assistant. As I advance my professional career, I would like to go back to school to get a Bachelor's in Early Child Education.
Meanwhile, while my art background provides children with tools to stimulate brain development I know that my Latino background can increase children's awareness of other cultures. My diverse background can be used as a toolbox to shape children’s emotions and attitudes towards the world and other human beings. As I considered myself bilingual -I am fluent in Spanish- I can provide children with the means to learn another language and excel in other areas of their lives. I strongly believe in the environment so I always try to foster to my children the importance of nature and how it is important to care for the earth. Last but not least important, My approach to child care is to bring knowledge by striking a balance between discipline structure, care, and companionship while acknowledging feelings, offering a choice, and putting the child in charge.
