About me
Hello, I'm Katie Murphy. I am a graduate of Christopher Newport University with my B.A in Musical Theatre and a Minor in Dance. The summer following my graduation I worked as an actor with the New Musicals Lab at the Ferguson Center for the Arts helping writers develop their up-and-coming projects. I have always been a very creative person and I think that is something that makes me stand out as a caregiver. More than anything I love to help children discover creative outlets or learn something new that excites them so I can find ways to incorporate that into our time together.
As soon as I was old enough, I helped in the church nursery and took on leadership roles during summer camps. My responsibilities included being a costumed storyteller, teaching one-on-one guitar, and teaching a drama class. Following that many families reached out for date night babysitting where I cared for children ages 3-15. I'm comfortable with siblings and am great at facilitating conversations to find compromise when not everyone wants to do the same things! Most of my responsibilities included making dinner, supervising homework, caring for pets, tidying up, and getting ready for bedtime. Once I received my driver's license, I spent more of my summers watching kids while their parents were at work and I would drive them to various activities, doctors' appointments, or run errands for the parents. Since moving to NYC to pursue theatre I have worked with children from 5 months to 16 years old both in temp positions and more long term after-school jobs. Having worked in 4 of the 5 boroughs (and NJ) over the years I'm very comfortable navigating the MTA, responsible, punctual and a strong communicator.
I hold a special place in my heart for all things creative. I think children are so special because they are unapologetically themselves. The fear of failing doesn't stop them from trying something new and I think we can all take a page from their books. As a caregiver it is my goal to preserve that confidence and help your child find activities and topics that inspire them to learn and grow, while I create a safe environment for them to do so.

In 5 years, I hope to be...
Working on a new and unique project. I know that sounds very broad, but I think I have lots of interests that are constantly growing. For me that could mean performing a role that feels like it was made for me, or maybe writing an album. It's important to me that whatever it is I feel like I am giving myself the opportunity to push myself as an artist to be the best I can be and am able to collaborate with other people that have similar goals for themselves.
Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...
I love when children have an interest in the performing arts so we have something to relate to one another with, but what I love even more is when they have something they feel like they can share with me. I once cared for a boy who was about 5 years old, and he loved everything weather related. It was so fun to see his eyes light up when we read books about storm chasers or how excited he got to point out the different types of clouds he saw in the sky while we were outside. Every time we saw one another he had something he had learned and couldn't wait to tell me about and I usually would find myself looking up something to share with him too. While I love to teach things to the children I work with it is so much more rewarding when we're able to learn together.
