About me

As the proud older sister of a much younger brother, I enjoyed playing and caring for young children from an early age and I am comfortable babysitting both boys and girls. My past experiences as a tutor make me a great homework buddy on everything from learning to read to Algebra and Latin. I am also an actor, singer, violinist, pianist, and bookworm. I am excellent at reading aloud (character voices are my specialty), know lots of lyrics to Frozen, Moana, and of course "The Wheels on the Bus". I also have the ability to transform into any Star Wars character at a moment's notice, a total willingness to play indoor or outdoor soccer, dress-up, pretend and/or build things, and of course, to play new games and try new things. I am also an excellent "burper" of little ones! Most of all, I am patient, energetic, have an open mind and am very flexible and adaptable.

Most recently, I have cared for children ages 3 months through 12, babysitting for three families in the past year. I am CPR certified and have also worked as a teacher, tutor and camp counselor for children ages 4 to 18. I have taught groups as large as 15 students and cared for siblings of very different ages (8 and 12). I like to share words, art and music with the children I babysit. For example, I recently sat for a middle school-age girl who wanted help overcoming a slight speech impediment. I taught her some vocal exercises and drills, encouraged her to to practice to have confidence in her speech and her acting, and listened and talked with her about her experiences and goals for the future, all of which was both fun and rewarding. Before coming to New York, I was a Teaching Assistant in the Voice Department of the Brown MFA program and also a Teaching Artist/Counselor at the Young Artists Summer Institute (YASI) at Trinity Repertory Company for two years. I worked with students from 11 to 18 years old, teaching them dialects, public speaking/auditioning, singing and acting. I also worked to help students with social anxieties or difficulties learn to feel more comfortable and confident performing and socializing with a group. I engaged and entertained large groups of students, helping them travel safely from place to place, and helping them cooperate with each other on group projects. Before working at YASI, I was a Performing Arts Camp Counselor at the Bethesda Chevy-Chase YMCA Day Camp in Bethesda, Maryland. There I directed students between the ages of 5 and 12 in productions of musicals like The Wizard of Oz. In addition to acting and singing, I taught them paint, draw, sew and embellish costumes, sets, and backdrops. I also taught them group games---especially improv games---to help foster bravery, creativity and cooperation, and I encouraged them to use their imaginations by writing and performing their own monologues and scenes.

I love kids because they have amazing imaginations, open minds, refreshing ways of looking at things, and often, lots of energy and enthusiasm. They constantly surprise me, and that is so exciting! I enjoy listening to them, supporting them and encouraging them, whether they are 6 months old, 6 years old, or 16 years old! But I also know that sometimes helping them means teaching them the importance of following certain rules. I think balancing encouragement, care and support with discipline is what makes a great babysitter, and I always strive for that balance.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

Continuing to work with children as a teacher or tutor. I also hope to be working as an actor consistently and perhaps to be beginning a family of my own. I hope to have begun to learn Spanish and I hope to have visited the Loire Valley, Amsterdam or Barcelona (at the moment, I have never been to any of those three places). I hope to have a garden -- even if it's only a roof garden or a window box!

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

Drawing, cooking, soccer, making paper airplanes, make believe of all kinds and reading. I love helping kids explore their environment and use their imaginations, whether it's through writing, crafting, or performing. I love sharing music with kids and helping them to learn to make music, especially singing or piano or violin. I enjoy helping them try new things---whether it's giving a class presentation or trying a new food. I also like helping them with their schoolwork and learning other languages (different accents and funny voices included). Most of all, I like to encourage them to have confidence in themselves and be creative, while also remaining organized and being considerate of others.
