About me
Hi,
I am a first-generation Panamanian-American raised happily in Brooklyn. I spent most of my foundational years in Prospect Heights and I have watched it go through many changes. I am an only child but do not feel sad, I have plenty of cousins and family friends I consider my older siblings. Currently, I am pursuing a dual degree in Special Education/ General Education. The want to pursue this degree was inspired by the work I do as a Paraprofessional. In this role, I work 1:1 with a student who has special needs. I became the students' own personal assistant teacher.
I have an early childhood special education background and 13 years of experience as a nanny working mostly with bilingual families, and families with special needs children. The age range of children I watch falls between 0-11 years old. I also have experience working with children as a tutor.
The longest I have worked for a family was 5 years. I started when the child was turning 5. I created a safe, structured, and caring environment while assisting a child with special needs with homework and Google Classroom. Some of my daily routines included; preparing nourishing meals & snacks, coordinating everyday activities that encouraged education and social skills, helping the child to develop healthy habits of hygiene, and observed play activities to identify positive play behaviors and areas in need of improvement. Implemented behavior redirection when appropriate. Another daily activity was transporting the child from school to their home, lessons, appointments, and other events while having open communication with parents about daily activities, positive developments, and issues. This helped the family and I to maintain a calendar of appointments and create detailed itineraries. Once a month I would prepare arts & crafts play to assist with fine and gross motor development. Occasionally I supervised the child while parents were on vacation, business trips, or weekend getaways.
This field has taught me the value of being a champion for the underdog. More than ever I want to make sure that families are getting adequate support in the mists of a terrible pandemic.
