About me

Hello. My name is Sarah Ashley McFee and I am a 5th grade teacher here in Chicago. I grew up in a small town called Rochester Hills in Michigan. I grew up with my sister Amanda, who also now lives here with me. Growing up I loved most of the same things I love now- running, reading, being active, and having fun with friends. As a teenager, I babysat some of the neighborhood kids. I also became a lifeguard and taught swim lessons to children. I went to Western Michigan University and graduated in 2009. During my time at Western Michigan I was able to do a study abroad program that took me to Prague, the Czech Republic. Post graduation, I went straight back to Prague to teach English as a second language. I planned on staying one year, but ended up staying three!

That's what got me here. I realized my passion for teaching and decided to come back to the states to pursue a master's degree in education. While getting my masters, I worked at a preschool called Children's Learning Place. I was an assistant teacher and my main focus was preschoolers ranging from ages 4-5. I helped with crafts, reading, play time, lunch, and naptimes. After graduation, I still came back each year for summer help. During that time I was in the infant and toddler rooms as well. My responsibilities included diaper changes, feedings, play time, tummy time, and naps. Currently, I teach reading, math, science, and social studies to 5th graders here in Chicago. After school, I am a part time babysitter to three amazing children. I started with them when they were 20 months, 3 and 4. My duties include diapers, dinner prep, playtime, reading, and the occasional bedtime. In addition, I am a mentor at the YMCA to an amazing 16 year old. I assist her with social emotional skills and academics.

As you can see, I love children and couldn't imagine my life without them. I am not a "put on a movie" type of babysitter. I am hands on, active, and am always looking for things to do with kids. I love finding activities related to their specific interests and working to support their social emotional needs.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

In five years I hope to still be a teacher, and working at my forever school. I would also like to have a leadership role at my school, and be a mentor teacher to new hires. I would also like to have visited Asia :)

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love to teach to the whole child- the social emotional aspect of teaching is vital for children's development. I love teaching how to handle emotions, what helps us grow, what we need to let go, and conflict resolution. I also love playing games with children that can range from board games to "the floor is lava". I try to keep kids active both mentally and physically.
