About me

My name is Jalen Whitmore. I am a Chicago native and the eldest of four children. I studied Psychology and Early Childhood education at Roosevelt University. Since leaving school, I've worked as a teacher, tutor and nanny.

The bulk of my background is with youth ages three to five years old. I spent my first couple of years after college working as an assistant at an early childhood center. It was here that I had the opportunity to gain more experience working with children ages six weeks to six years. My responsibilities included assisting with daily instruction, classroom management and data collection. My time in pre-k was a blast, everyday was filled with new challenges and discoveries; there was never a dull moment! After spending over five years with little ones, I was ready for a change. In 2019 I took my talents to a school for students living with autism and intellectual disabilities. It was a major change at first, and it took me some time to adjust. Ultimately, many of the skills I'd developed in pre-kindergarten translated to my work with my current students. I maintain relationships with many of the families that I've served as a pre-k assistant, and when I'm not teaching I often sit for said families.

Recent events have forced educators and caretakers to adjust the way in which we serve our students and clients. Throughout all of the tumult, the children haven't missed a beat, and have met every challenge faced with courage and enthusiasm. It's this resilience during difficult times that inspires me to continue to do all that I can to provide the best instruction, the best care, and give my students the best chance to grow and succeed at everything they do.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love being crafty and creative with my students! I love introducing them to new mediums and forms of expression, and teaching them how to improve their art skills. I also enjoy reading and discovering new stories with children, and helping them turn their imaginations into coherent stories of their own. I'm no musician, but I love sharing my instruments with my students and introducing them to new sounds and genres of music.
