About me

Hello Families!

My name is Mariam and I am thrilled to start this journey! Growing up both of my parents worked as aid workers for the UN. We lived in South Africa, Switzerland, Nigeria, Oman, and Portugal. Experiencing so much of the world during my formative years has fed my curiosity about cultures, human interaction, and how our early experiences shape who we become. It is because of this curiosity I decided to major in Sociology and Early Childhood Education in college. Since then I’ve worked with children from a wide age group age (3months to 11 years old) and all walks of life.
Being the oldest of four siblings I’ve been nurturing children for as long as I remember. I was always fascinated by my siblings developmental milestones and how they each reached them so differently. This reinforced that the childhood experience is not a monolithic one even for siblings living under the same roof. I started my babysitting journey during the summer of my junior year in high school in which I was also a lifeguard at a sleep-away camp. The children were between the ages of 6 months to 5 years old, with varying degrees of responsibilities, from changing diapers, making baby bottles, to helping with homework, coordinating bedtime routines, and managing after school activity schedules. Since then the youngest I’ve cared for was 3months at the start and the oldest was 11. I have experience with Montessori methods, cloth diapering, introducing baby to solids, baby sign language, homework help for older kids, caring for special needs children, specifically ADHD, Dyslexia, speech delays, and sensory issues.
As someone who absolutely loves cooking and creating in the kitchen I enjoy including little ones in the choosing of ingredients and cooking process. Since I’ve been following a plant based diet I am able and very knowledgeable in preparing diet specific meals. Currently, as a new challenge I am learning French and would love to impart my love for the language to my charges. Fully infant/child/adult CPR certified.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

I hope to be fully certified to teach the early grades specifically in Montessori methods. Fluent in French and continuously doing all that I can to empower children.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love teaching babies sign language as seeing them be able to communicate brings me so much joy! For older kids, I love involving them in the cooking process and I’ve had lots of success with getting otherwise picky eaters to try new exciting foods.
