About me
I am the last of nine siblings who grew up in a very large extended family with lots of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and was given the task of caring for them all (although I wasn't that much older than many of them). My parents were very loving and taught us from an early age to always treat everyone with respect. Upon graduating from Secondary school, I worked with the Ministry of Education as a Primary school teacher for six years before migrating. I have been living in this great city of New York for over fifteen years, and it was here that I developed a true love for childcare. The different cultures, parental styles, and child-related activities tickled my curiosity and fueled my drive to delve deeper into the profession. I realized that in order to provide holistic child care, I would need to broaden my horizons and educate myself in the areas of child development. So I returned to school and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Speech and Language Pathology. I firmly believe that childcare entails much more than changing diapers, going to the playgrounds, and preparing meals and snacks (albeit I am also skilled in those areas!). My style of caregiving incorporates imaginative, parallel and symbolic play activities into the child's routines, adjusting based on age and needs.
My childcare journey began in 2002 when I was given the honor of caring for a pair of twin boys on the UES of Manhattan. They were premies (4 months adjusted) and required extra special care. I spent the next two years working with two more families on the UWS of Manhattan. My childcare journey then brought me to the Chelsea area, where I provided care for another set of twins, who were also premies. This job required very long hours, including some weekends, since both parents had busy careers which required them to be out of the country quite often. My next full-time position brought me to the Park Slope /Prospect Heights neighborhoods of Brooklyn. This is where I have spent the majority of my years as a childcare provider. I have had the pleasure of caring for children ranging from three months to 7 years old. The nature of my job varies significantly, I have worked with children on the autism spectrum, children diagnosed with ADHD, children receiving ABA services and children who are mainstreamed. My duties as a childcare provider include preparing and cleaning of bottles, feeding breast milk/formula, creating and introducing solids, as well as sleep training. I was also responsible for the children's laundry and basically any chores that are child-related. There were families who also requested that I take their loved ones to music, gym, or any other classes that were conducted.
My years as a nanny has equipped me with a set of talents that I believe will be valuable in my childcare role. I honed my abilities in child development and early childhood education, providing a solid foundation for every childcare position. My communication, people-centric nature, and eagerness to please have afforded me excellent critical thinking skills. I am excited to contribute my strengths and proficiency in collaboration and hope that it will be a great contributor to a great work relationship. As an extroverted and personable communicator with a proven track record in child supervision, my focus on building strong professional relationships has been a valuable asset throughout my career.
