About me

I am originally from Louisville, KY where I lived until I moved to New York City four years ago for grad school. My bachelor's degree from the University of Louisville is in Psychology. My master's degree from NYU is in Sociology of Education. Sociology of Education uses theories and ideas from sociology to explain phenomena in education. My thesis was about universal prekindergarten programs around the world and how their educational philosophies impact their ability to provide quality childcare. In my undergraduate work I focused on the psychology of teaching and learning while in my graduate work I focused on systems of education. Both have provided me with great working knowledge of how children process and grow in their educational journeys. Growing up with a sister who was six years younger, I was always trying to take care of her and help my mom around the house. Growing up in this roll at home definitely fueled my love for working with children.

I have been providing childcare services for 10 years. I have worked with children ages newborn to 13 years old. My responsibilities varied depending on the age of the child. I usually assist with feeding the children their meals, cooking solo or with the children, do imaginative play, read books, or take them outside for time in a park or a walk in the stroller, schedule playdates, create projects and activities, followed by bedtime routines (pajamas, diaper changes, baths). I have worked as a date night and evening sitter, camp counselor, art teacher, assistant teacher in an early education classroom, and a part time nanny. I am CPR certified for both children and infants. I have experience with one older children (age 12 at the time) high on the autism spectrum, and with one child (age 26 months time) in a classroom setting.

My approach to childcare is to provide children with enriching experiences that all them to engage in self exploration. I believe in letting children try and learn from failure and experience.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

beginning my PhD in Educational Leadership to pursue a career as a school principle. Until then I am hoping to gain more experience working in all kinds of different educational spaces to learn about all aspects of education that face children.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

are basic cooking and baking skills, craft skills such as using scissors (if they are old enough), glue, and paint supplies. I am a big proponent of teaching manners, sharing, and respect for others. I also think it is important to teach children to recycle at an early age. I love going outside and kicking or throwing a ball, playing jump rope or hop scotch, using swings and other playground equipment, and playing in water (sprinklers or pools). For older children, I'd love to engage with them in things they enjoy doing- reading, legos/building, arts, STEM. I love learning new things and enjoy discussing things with people. I'd love to allow them the experience of sharing the knowledge they have with me and turning the learning experience into a collaborative process.
