About me

Hi there, I’m Kelsey! I grew up in Tennessee with only my big brother, our four dogs, and some open fields for entertainment. This meant my childhood was filled with creativity and a heavy sprinkling of imagination. My brother and I enjoyed anything active outdoors, spy missions, putting on plays for our parents, action hero tea parties, and building forts. I went on to earn my BA from the University of Tennessee in Children’s Book Narrative and Illustration through the College Scholars Honors Program. My thesis stressed the importance of not underestimating children and using books as a means to foster relationships. Prior to graduation I wrote, illustrated, and self-published my first children’s book. My passion for the arts and my lifelong love of children makes nannying a very natural and fulfilling fit for me while I continue to grow as an illustrator.

I have been taking care of kids in one form or another for most of my life including babysitting, art camp counselor, and middle school substitute teacher. In January 2016 I started nannying, and for the next three years truly lived my best life with some incredible newborn-4y/o's. I'm still in touch with all of them and recently made one a customized coloring book for his birthday. I've worked for three different families, and my duties included but weren't limited to meals, bottles (breast/formula), diapers, adventures to parks and museums, taking strollers on trains to gym class, swim lessons, driving them to school drop-offs/pickups, grocery runs, laundry, tidying up, dishes, cooking, reading, drawing, singing, playing, dancing, making boats out of old Amazon boxes, exercises for physical and verbal development, and teaching respect by showing respect. I once sewed a reversible apron for a 2 y/o who liked to bake with me and brought my tap shoes to show a birthday girl how to use hers.

I give my families my all because I value our relationship and trust. I believe structure, balance, and two-way communication is key to providing kids with a safe space to learn and grow and laugh. I've trained in dance, choir, french, martial arts, and infant emergency care, so I double as a walking safety musical.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

A mom. I'd like to be starting my family by the time the five year mark comes around. I'd also like to be well on my way to making my illustration career my full-time job.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love to teach kids words and colors. I once told a two year old that complementary colors meant that when they see each other the colors take turns saying "You're pretty!" "No, you're pretty!" I like to teach them phrases or songs in french. I don't remember all of my french from high school, but I know enough to pass a few things along. I make silly faces and do funny accents. I like to encourage problem solving and choosing to try before giving up on something. I once told a toddler that difficult things tend to be a little easier when you tell yourself, "I can DO IT!" One day I heard her say that to herself, and I almost got teary. I always encourage kids to draw, dance, and read with me. And I like to establish us as a team both in play and in how we treat each other.
