About me

I'm a New York City native who grew up in Queens and moved to Brooklyn over eight years ago. I'm an avid reader and majored in English at Reed College, a small, liberal arts school in the Pacific Northwest where I wrote my thesis on Macbeth. I moved back to New York shortly after graduating and began my nanny career over 16 years ago. In that time, I've worked in many neighborhoods for a wide variety of families, both full and part time. I've cared for twins and infants up through middle school students,

The last few years I've been teaching while doing additional childcare on the side. I started off as an assistant to a Bank Street graduate who taught me about the "process, not product" approach to early childhood education. I learned how to help the children in my care feel heard, handle conflicts, and pursue what interested them while I acted a guide. Eventually, I was running my own co-op school in Park Slope before going to teach forest school full-time.

Being outside every day has taught me to go with the flow and trust my gut. There is so much I can't control: the weather, who else is in the park that day, etc. I've learned to be prepared for anything, vigilant about safety, and to communicate clearly, efficiently, and effectively with my students, their parents, and my teaching team. I've also learned that even in a big city, nature is all around us. I love being able to point out a heron, hawk, or turtle to a child and am even more delighted when a child hands me a mud pie or a worm they found!

In 2019, I had an opportunity to nanny full time for a family with three month old twins. That family left during the pandemic but we are still in touch (I even got to visit them in their new home in St Louis). I’ve been a nanny for other wonderful families since then.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

Going back to school to pursue a degree on environmental law or public policy (while still babysitting on the side). I want to leave the world better than it is now for the next generation.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love being outside with children watching birds, digging for worms, and splashing in puddles. I hope to pass on my enthusiasm for literature with stories and picture books. For toddlers, I make sensory bins with beans, pom poms, or soapy water and sponges for a "carwash" experience. I have a great homemade play dough recipe that's usually a hit but I also like to do child-led "kitchen experiments" where we add a little of this, a little of that, and see what happens. With older children, I'm a fan of board games and am always impressed with the children's patience and focus when we're all glued to a Monopoly board, look up, and find that two hours have passed!
