About me

I have worked with children in a variety of roles, and each has expanded my perspective on childcare. In my positions as a camp counselor and babysitter, I learned the basics of keeping children safe, engaging them with games, and staying active.

When I took on a role in youth development with middle schoolers, I began to discover the nuances of social-emotional learning, and the ways that every small action colors a child's life. I learned that it is vitally important to watch my words closely and always bring a positive attitude.

One of my great passions is music. In my free time, I am a songwriter and musician. This interest led me to teach private guitar lessons and lead an all-girl after-school rock band. I've learned how to follow the interests of my students and how to find the music that inspires them to practice. Playing and collaborating on songs with children has reminded me that music is about the connections we form with each other. I also took pride in being an example of a woman who can rock! I want to foster a can-do attitude in the children I care for.

I also want to encourage curiosity. With the right research, we can find the answer to any question. The world is wild and weird, and I find I'm bewildered by the wonder that children can make of it. It's often hilarious and magical, and my own view of the world is brightened through my work with children.

In my work as an assistant teacher at an NYC public school, I discovered that few things are as rewarding as guiding children in their pursuit of knowledge. I was given the task of helping a student who wouldn’t read during silent reading time. Her teacher asked me to let her read aloud to me and ask questions about the content of each page. Over the school year, I worked with her and watched as her reading comprehension grew, and seeing that growth energized me to keep at the hard work of tutoring.
