About me

Hi, I’m Alec! I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where I spent many summers attending a theatre camp. In 2011, I moved to New York to study musical theatre at NYU. During the summers, I would return home to work as a counselor and teacher at the same theatre camp I loved as a kid. I learned that working with children was a great source of inspiration for me. I was reminded of the very things that drove me to pursue my dreams when I saw them discovering their dreams for the first time. After graduating with a BFA in acting in 2015, I spent 9 months traveling around the US with the national tour of the musical Ragtime. Since then, I have continued to balance my acting career with my other passions, and I feel lucky to be able to continue to work with children in both educational and one-on-one settings.

I have worked with children in a variety of settings including babysitting, camps, leading student travel groups around NYC, and teaching theatre. I started babysitting during my senior year of high school, and since then, I have worked with a number of NYC families. My first regular babysitting job in the city was with a 6 year old boy who I would pick up from school, take to after school activities and playdates, and cook dinner for before his parents would return for bedtime. My other regular families include 2 siblings, a girl and boy, ages 7 and 9, who I worked for for several years, and 2 other boys, ages 6 and 10, who I sat for part-time, and continue to sit for from time-to-time. I enjoy coming up with ideas for crafts or games, I love to cook, I love animals, science, and I am always interested in encouraging my families’ children to follow their passions. The sibling pair I sat for both went to dance classes, and being a dancer myself, I loved to practice with them and hear from them what they had learned in class that week. Many of the families I have worked with care a lot about exposing their kids to creativity, which is something that I am very passionate about.

I have worked professionally in theatre since graduating in 2015, and continue to leave time to work with kids. I think it is so important to encourage kids at a young age to incorporate creativity into their lives. Whether they grow up to be writers, or designers, or actors, or accountants, creative thinking is an important life skill for everyone. I have learned first-hand the importance of living a creative life. I think a lot of kids see me as a giant kid. I'm lanky, a little bit silly looking, some might say cartoonish, however I see this as an asset. Kids often find me easy to talk to because I understand them in a way that a lot of adults have difficulty with. I like to create a patient, safe environment for them to learn and live, because I know that being social can sometimes be difficult. Working with kids one-on-one or in small groups is especially fulfilling for me. It has been a real joy to watch my kids grow up over the years, and to know that I can provide an environment for them to learn more about who they are and who they can grow up to be is why I love to babysit.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

In 5 years I would love to be producing my own work, whether that may be a movie, a musical, or some crazy piece of immersive theatre. I enjoy what I'm doing now though, and I hope to have even more freedom to pursue as many of my different interests as I can. If we're talking cuckoo crazy, I'd love to design my own theme park! But I may need at least a little more than 5 years to do that.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love to teach children to explore their own creativity, whether that's drawing, dancing, or storytelling. I've explored a lot of different interests in my life, many of which may not seem to fit together at first, but I haven't let that stop me. Let's write an opera about the best grilled cheese you've ever had! Specifically, I love to talk to kids about science and space, and learn more about those myself. I'm also a juggler, unicycler, and stilt walker and love to teach kids how to start learning themselves!
