About me
I am originally from Savannah, Georgia where I was born and raised until I was 18 years old. In Georgia, my main 'thing' was being a theatre kid. I started with theatre at age 6, and as I grew older, I continued to be apart of plays with diverse casts. I quickly became fond of helping out and looking out for the younger kids in the productions. As I aged, I went on to become a camp counselor and helped out with programs for the younger children at the theatre. My love for children eventually extended outside of the theatre community and I began babysitting around the age of 14.
Since then, I have done one off babysitting jobs as well as nannied for 3 years for one family on the Upper West Side. I have watched children from 6 months up to 13 years old, and I am equipped with skills to keep them entertained.
Although I am not heavily involved with theatre anymore, it has taught me so many things that apply to my work with children. I have learned to encourage growth, to always try again, to give thought in our experiences and to explore life with creativity, spontaneity, and fun. I find that those aspects of theatre are integral to the development of a child. It is important to me when I am spending time with children, to allow them to be creative and ask questions. I love bringing my theatre training into my time spent with kids. I know a lot of theatre games, songs, arts and crafts and I love helping kids activate their imagination. My favorite things about kids are their honesty, willingness to explore and their fearlessness in asking questions. They inspire me greatly.
Another passion of mine is mindfulness. I am currently enrolled in a course for a mindfulness practice called Sensory Awareness. I will receive my certification this July. Sensory Awareness is based around using our 5 senses intentionally through everyday activities such as walking, standing sitting, eating, etc. in order to live life more present in the moment. I love to incorporate this work with the children I work with. I believe that mindfulness is an excellent tool for children and can help with emotional regulation and self-confidence.
If I were to describe myself in five words, they would be: inquisitive, driven, energetic, compassionate, and earnest. I have often been told that I have an old soul, but have a childlike energy. I love new experiences, traveling, and challenging myself to go outside of my comfort zone. I am a huge people person and love engaging with and meeting new people.
I would say that to me, the best part of working with children is fostering a relationship with them and watching them grow. It is important to me that I can help a child understand their worth and potential and help them gain confidence. I always find that the children end up teaching me more than I teach them.
