About me

Hello! My name is Megan, and I am a certified art teacher in New York City with a masters degree in education. I have been teaching art in New York City public charter schools for the past six years for a wide range of children between second through eighth grade. I also taught science for two years through the Teach for America program! I have always loved working with children and I am passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Currently I am a practicing textile artist and I own my own handmade jewelry business.

Before I was a teacher in New York City, I was a babysitter and nanny since the age of 15 in my home state of Colorado. The past six months I have worked with an amazing family as a part-time after school nanny in the UES with two children - B(7) and G(10). I was responsible for pick up, homework and study routines, activity transportation, meals, and pre-bed time prep. I also took on some home organization projects for the family. The other family that I have worked with babysitting occasionally the past six months has two boys (2) and (5).

When I work with children I aim to foster their independence through creative art making choices. All of my classroom experience has taught me that children respond to positive relationships, boundaries, and consistency. I know how to develop those relationships with children though setting clear expectations, then following up to make sure they were met. No child (or adult) is perfect, and that's why with patience, and clear communication you can work with a child to grow. Working as a nanny I know my job will be to uphold the routines and expectations the family has already set and to bring some creative passion and fun to the job. I enjoy being actively involved wherever I am working or living. I love to visit museums, (especially bringing children to them) volunteer with art organizations and explore the city. Currently I am volunteering with The Met and MoMA. I am a yogi and have found how much the practice has helped me when working with children. I obviously LOVE to draw, craft, sew, paint or any form of art making and have a serious art supply collection.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

Being a great artist doesn't only mean you can draw! Creativity comes in many forms and expressions and everyone is capable of it. I can teach lessons and know art activities in most art mediums. For example, drawing, painting, sewing, collage, origami, print making, knitting/crocheting, digital art, photography, and sculpture. I have lead field trips, or taken children I work with to every art museum in the city! Once I lead a whole school field trip (300+ kids) on a trip to Storm King Art Center. :-)
