About me
It’s hard to pinpoint when my experience with children truly began for I have been entrusted with their care since I was a child myself. Growing up as the oldest sibling in a household of two working parents, it was only natural to entrust me with the care of my younger siblings and cousins. By the tender age of ten, I was fully bilingual, a taco-maker expert, and a full-time role model to the younger members of my family.
When the time came for me to join the workforce, it was clear to me that a job in the childcare and education field was the most fitting. During my senior year of high school, I began working at a Kumon Learning Center in Miami, Florida. There, I assisted school-aged students in completing their In-class Kumon assignments. When I was promoted to Junior Kumon Instructor my responsibilities changed. I was now in charge of teaching basic reading and math skills to a class of Pre-K and kindergartner students through the Kumon method. At first, keeping students focused and engaged was not an easy task but after much mentoring from my supervisors, I quickly learn the power of leading by example. Eventually, I understood that if I was excited about teaching, my students would be excited about learning.
Nowadays, when it comes to interacting with children, I apply that same philosophy. For the past year and a half, I've been caring for two lovely boys aged 4 and 8 and although they have very different personalities, I've been able to spark their interest in various subjects by simply showing and expressing my genuine curiosity. Through time, we've been able to create a safe, fun and mentally stimulating environment for them to explore their new found hobbies and engage in various activities such as soccer, chess, skating, collaging, and slime making!
So far, learning and exploring with the boys has been the most rewarding experienced since I moved to New York in 2015. Overall, I love working with children because they keep my creative and curious spirit alive and I can only hope I'll be fortunate enough to be given more opportunities to do so.
