About me
Hello! My name is Emily and I am a warm, energetic, and intelligent caregiver. Since I was a teenager, caring for kids has been an important part of my life. After college I took a brief hiatus from this calling, and worked in software development for several years. However, I found that my passion for working with and helping kids was enough to encourage me to quit my corporate tech job and begin working in a school. As a former 'techie' I am a strong believer in STEM education. Teaching science at a charter school has been a wonderful way to transition from my past life in tech, to my future life as a learning psychologist.
I have spent several summers as a nanny, caring for children from ages 4 months to 13 years. I love kids of all ages, and I find their innate curiosity, honesty, and candor to be refreshing (and often hilarious) respite from the fast-paced, all-business mentality that dominates our lives here in New York.
During college, I would spend my summers nannying for families full-time. My primary client was a family of 3 children (ages 4 months, 3 years and 6 years). Our summers were full of activities -- from art projects to swimming at the pool to library trips to museum visits. I kept the kids engaged, active, and happy. I truly enjoyed my time with this family and we keep in touch to this day, many years later!
As I began my career in New York City (I worked for a tech company for several years) I would babysit intermittently; typically on nights or weekends for friends with infants or toddlers.
Last year, I was an elementary school science teacher where I taught in "inclusion classrooms" (This is when special needs children are mixed into a typically developing grade classroom and are given extra attention from the teacher). I also lead small-group tutoring for elementary-level reading and math intervention. I believe in creating fun learning experiences at all times, whether it is at the library, in the park, or in our own home science lab (aka the kitchen!).
Now, after having been a teacher for one year, I am planning to attend graduate school for learning psychology in the fall. I have my first experience of "summer' vacation" since college, and have taken up my nannying pursuits once again. I currently care for a family of two boys (ages 5 and 8). In addition to typical summer activities (beach, bike rides, etc) I have also offered to tutor the younger child, (I noticed he appeared slightly behind a first grade level in reading and I have had several years of experience as a reading tutor).
I will be attending graduate school at Columbia's Teacher's College for Applied Development and Learning Psychology in the fall. I love animals, healthy cooking, and have an active lifestyle so I am happy to care for pets, meal prep, and keep your kids active and engaged in both academics or creative play.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...
I love helping children with reading because it is incredibly rewarding to watch children feel proud and confident when they see their own progress. I also love anything to do with nature, animals or the outdoors! Children are naturally so curious about the environment around them and it is easy to create fun games and learning experiences just by observing our surroundings at the park.
