About me

When I was a child, I wanted nothing more than a baby sister or brother. Unfortunately, I was the youngest child and had to wait until I was old enough to babysit for other families. When I was a teen, my local library was hosting a babysitting course in which I learned how to swaddle a baby, change diapers, prepare simple meals, and some do's and don'ts! (Did you know that cheesy snacks are dangerous for young ones, they can choke on mozzarella sticks and cheesy cheesy pizza! I didn't know until I took this course).

Now, many years later I've been lucky enough to work for welcoming and loving families of all shapes and sizes. I've worked with children ranging from infancy to young adulthood, with most of my experience working with three- and four-year-old children.

I was a camp counselor for three years where I looked after a group of three-year-olds and assisted in their everyday activities (swimming, tennis, arts and crafts). During this period, I was CPR certified and First Aid Certified through the American Red Cross. After each summer, I was asked back to work as the head counselor for the "minnows" (the three-year-old group) because I was seen as the "minnow whisperer".

At camp, I met two families who I went on to babysit for. One family had three children, two ten-year-old boys and one three-year-old girl. I worked as a babysitter and a mother's helper while their mother took care of household chores. I prepared meals, aided in swimming lessons, and guided playtime for the children.

The other family had four children, one thirteen-year-old, a ten-year-old, a five-year-old, and a three-year-old. I worked as a babysitter and mother's helper for this family, as well as house sat for the family and their two dogs. With this family, I prepared meals, supervised bath time and bedtime routines, guided playtime, and drove the kids to and from camp.

This past year, I have been working as a Lead Teacher for a Pre-K classroom of 18 four-year-old students. My responsibilities include leading a teaching team, creating and implementing lesson plans, and individualizing instruction for each of my students. I am also enrolled in graduate school for Early Childhood Education and Special Education, which is how I'm turning my love of children into a livelihood!

I am nurturing, loving, kind, gentle, and patient - it's in my blood! I've been told that my strength in the classroom is being a compassionate teacher who listens to every voice, valuing every child's feelings and thoughts. Whether in the classroom or in a home setting, I am able to create a safe and comfortable environment to allow children to learn and grow. I believe that children learn best through play - hands-on, child-directed, independent play. In this, children can practice their social-emotional, physical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills.

I am passionate about children, I truly believe they are our future leaders and I am cognizant about treating them as such! I love getting to know all of their interests and quirks, and then sharing my own. It makes my world when I can bond with a child over how much we love chocolate cupcakes, and then bake our very own! I also love to be outdoors, play in the park, run, and live an active life, which definitely comes in handy with the young ones.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

Mastering my craft! I'm a first year teacher and I feel that I need more experience under my belt to truly be an effective educator. There are loads of things I want to do differently next year, so I can only imagine how much I'll change in five years.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

Art! I'm a photographer at heart, but I've introduced my students to famous painters and their works, and I enjoy working with my students to create their own renditions. I also enjoy anything hands-on. For Pre-K, we make loads of play dough, slime, oobleck, and even some more edible items like cupcakes and rice krispie treats when we have classroom birthdays. I love to be outdoors, so I always make sure to take my students to the park on a nice sunny day and run around with them.
