About me

I first stepped into the role of 'teacher' as a springboard diving instructor at a local all-girls summer camp. This role forced me to be the best version of myself, to be a role model and beacon of support, encouragement and strength for my girls. That summer turned into a journey of six summers at the pool working with many of the same students who returned each year looking forward to improving their dives and learning something new. Although I took on the role of educator, I learned so much from my students and was able to grow as a teacher. From this experience I found my niche working in education and with students.

As I moved through my studies and gained new experiences in the work force, I focused my efforts on closing the achievement gap and working to make education more equitable and accessible. I just finished serving a year as an AmeriCorps member with Reading Partners, a literacy intervention nonprofit working to close the literacy gap in low-income schools.

I have been working with children for over 8 years and have been babysitting for even longer. In addition to these positions I also worked at my university’s children’s center where I floated between our infant, toddler and pre-K classrooms helping teachers in students in whichever way I was most needed.

While in university I worked as a teaching assistant at our school's children's center, where I assisted infant to pre-K teachers with their students in the classroom and on the playground. Tasks included anything from to helping resolve conflicts, to supervising safety, to putting children down for afternoon naps.

My passion for education and working with students took me to China after graduating, where I taught middle school and high school students English as well as American culture and current affairs. Continuing to pursue education equity in the states, I came to New York in 2016 to join Reading Partners, a literacy intervention nonprofit, working with and tutoring K-4th grade students who were not meeting grade-level benchmarks in reading.

I love the optimism that goes along with working with children. Students and young people have so much learn and give. Investing in children and providing opportunities for excellent education to ensure students are able to reach their full potential is the groundwork of an enlightened, progressive and engaged society. I recently started a part-time position in the education department of Democracy Now!, an independent daily news broadcast. I am especially excited about this role because I see it as an opportunity to establish education and media literacy as the foundation of civic engagement.
