About me

I have 12 years of experience as a Montessori school teacher. In this position, I have taught children from the age of 6 months to six-years-old. My credentials from the Montessori Institute in London qualify me to teach and care for infants, toddlers, and early childhood ages. I am now teaching at one of the best nursery schools in New York City with a Montessori orientation. Parents' and colleagues' reviews of my teaching consistently praise my patience, innovativeness, and warmth towards the children under my care. I have also worked as a nanny for a family of two twin boys and one girl; at the time, the children were aged 2 ½ and the youngest girl was six months old. I worked in this position for more than a year.

I am called upon to communicate effectively with my co-workers and parents in my work as a teacher and as a nanny. To this end, I have completed a Dale Carnegie course in Communication, at which I won the Highest Achievement award for excellence in communication. My approach to child care is to follow the child, observe, keep them safe and happy, and to help them to be independent in a home setting. I believe in Montessori's principle of "following the child." The child has a natural curiosity that must be lovingly nourished; he or she is also an adult-in-training and can benefit from having a caretaker who models consistent grace and courtesy. Most importantly, children also need a sense of routine and order, as well as fun.

When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, playing soccer, doing safaris, and watching documentaries.

In 5 years, I hope to be...

a Montessori instructor, teaching other students how to be effective nursery school and/or child care workers within the Montessori tradition.

Activities & skills I love to teach & share with children...

I love to tell the students about the natural wildlife and different cultures. I used to be a safari tour guide, so I like to bring the safari to children in the United States in any way that I can. In my current job, I initiated an "around the world" curriculum, starting first with Kenya and its wildlife. This curriculum has now been adopted by our community at the school and has been a great success. Parents and teachers work together to introduce students to the many different parts of the world from which we come from. This kind of work fosters cross-cultural understanding as well as curiosity. It also includes a gastronomic component--we sample and eat food from different countries across the world.
